As a parent, you know full well that, one day, you’ll have to let go of your baby. As much as perhaps you’d like to at times, you cannot hold their hand throughout their entire life. You must let your children get on with things as independent human beings. It doesn’t sound easy at first, but you get used to it. When you allow them to go to their friend’s house for the first time or let them spend a few unsupervised hours at the park, it’s slightly awkward, but it’s something you can do pretty quickly.

Then the time comes where your children hit adulthood and are sent off to college. There they are, heading off to a place miles away to study and become their own person. Because they won’t be home anymore, this can become pretty upsetting. You cannot help them when things get difficult; they’re on their own. 

The chances are that you’ll miss them dearly – that doesn’t have to be too much of a problem, though. It sounds scary, but it is, again, something you get used to. If you feel like you need a few ideas in terms of how to stop yourself from missing them too much, then read on and take in some of the following points:

Stay In Touch As Much As You Can

This sounds very obvious, but it should probably still be mentioned. You probably have a smartphone and may even be using it to read this article. You have their number. If you want to know something, then you can give them a call or send them a text message. If you want a little chat or are wondering how they’re doing, you can get to them in seconds. Just don’t message or call too much – you’re not supposed to be overbearing anymore!

Keep Pictures!

If you have photos on your shelf and your phone of them, then you’ll always have those memories of them in front of you. Sure, your thoughts are great, but there’s something about actually seeing them in front of you that can make you feel a lot better. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve got a good-sized black photo frame picture of them in the living room or a gallery of small snaps on your phone, real images should do the trick.

Consider How Much Fun They’re Going To Have 

They’re going to grow so much and become so independent because of this entire move. They won’t be as incompetent as before due to their new lease of life after you’ve sent them off to college. They will return to you so much more mature after all the fun and all the experiences. Just know that they won’t be missing you as much and that they NEED this kind of break from you.

Don’t Sit Around And Think For Too Long. 

Do something to keep your mind occupied so that you don’t overthink absolutely everything regarding their new life. If you sit around for too long, your mind can become a minefield that is packed full of negative hypotheticals. That’s not something you ever want in life. Don’t worry about things you cannot control – this is absolutely out of your control now!
