Before you can start working towards becoming a healthier person, you need to have an idea of what health is. It isn’t the fashion models and superstars that fill the media right now. Health doesn’t always look like the kind of people who find their way in front of a camera.

Instead, health means work. Becoming a better you means sacrificing time and effort for a better result.

To become healthier, you do need to understand what that means.  Researching how to get healthy is the right first step! It shows that you’re taking your health-related goals seriously, and you’re not relying on the media to tell you how you should be.

1) Not Everyone’s an Expert — Consider Your Source

It’s easy to fall down a rabbit hole online. One article links to the next, and before you know it a few hours have gone byand you’re reading about Saharan alligator diets or something else random. Most of the time, people fall down these rabbit holes because they didn’t consider the source.

Everyone is competing for your time on the internet, and they will lie to you to keep it. Be careful about what you believe when you’re doing health-related research online. Don’t fall victim to fad diets, faux tips, or other schemes.

A little bit of doubt is healthy!

2) Watch What You Eat, Drink, and Breathe

Nothing will affect your body more than what you put into it, and that goes for more than just food. Smoking will affect your lungs and will eventually kill you, and drinking too much soda and alcohol can wreak havoc on your health. Even the things that your body touches can have lasting effects.

The best way to make sure your body stays healthy is to watch what goes into it. First, try to develop a sense of the nutritional value of the food you eat. While you may not need to go on a diet, you should know if a doughnut or an apple has more calories, and which is a healthier snack.

Then, you can start trying to control the things that you drink. Water is the best drink you can ever have, but few can only drink water. Try adopting tea or coffee if you don’t like the blandness of water.

Finally, be conscious of the air that you breathe. If you’re a smoker, cut it out and quit! And if you live near an area that could be polluting the air, reach out to someone to change it, or move away.

3) Mental Health Matters More Than Physical

Mental health wasn’t always as important as it is today. There was a time when the mentally ill were treated as if they were possessed or like they were dangerous to society. A simple panic attack could cause you to lose complete control of your life as people didn’t know how to treat you.

In several ways, the same applies today. Not taking care of your mental health can lead to thousands in hospitalization costs, or worse. So make sure your mind is as fit as your body!

If you’re feeling stressed, do something that helps you relax. If you’re feeling depressed, make sure you stay around people who care about you so that they can help you through it. And if nothing makes sense and you don’t feel like yourself, talk about it!

Never let anything stay on your mind for too long. It’ll eat away at your mental health, and all of your work on your physical health will be for nothing.
